There's nothing like a good long soak in a hot tub, and this is a tub designed just for that pleasure. The Soft Bathtub (International Cushioned Products Inc.) uniquely and comfortably conforms to you once the hot water is added (Figure 10-20). A high-density foam core insulates the tub so it retains hot water temperatures longer. According to the manufacturer, tests show only 1 degree F of heat loss every 10 minutes. It's been estimated that a cast iron or cultured marble bathtub could be three times less efficient.

The elastomeric polyurethane coating resists corrosion and dulling longer than other coatings. But it's probably harder to clean than a porcelain tub, right? Wrong! The manufacturer claims its nonporous surface is "eight times easier to keep clean than porcelain." After all, cushioned tubs and whirlpools are used in hospitals, where hygienic conditions must be strictly maintained and accidents avoided. The nonslip and soft surface of this tub could minimize the risk of a fall and the chance of injury if a fall should occur. Don't overlook these features when considering a new bathtub in the residential market, especially for the accessible market.

The standard size Soft Bathtub weighs in at just over 100 pounds. It's easy to install in a standard 5-foot bathtub opening. Its cushioned perimeter allows it to butt up against an uneven surface and form a seal, or you can put it into any pedestal installation. The manufacturer offers a ten-year warranty on the product when installed in residential and five years on commercial and institutional projects.

Manhours

  • For new construction: 2.0 manhours for a crew of two for supply fittings but no rough-in.

  • For remodeling of existing space: 6.67 manhours for a crew of two for tear-out, fixture, and supply fittings. This doesn't include finishing the wall surface.

As you can see by the materials and options in this chapter, you have all kinds of opportunities and choices when designing or remodeling a bathroom or kitchen. But don't limit these products to just these areas. Be creative, and see where these products might fit into other areas of a home. Let your customers know they do have options: there's always an alternative around the corner!

Now let's move on to the next chapter for a look at new ideas in decking. It's packed full of alternative products that will help in the design and layout of your next deck project.
