By now, you probably realize that there are a lot of alternative materials systems out there, offering you plenty of construction options. For instance, an all-wood foundation gives you the flexibility to replace an existing foundation one section at a time. It also lets you install the foundation without having to hire a subcontractor.

You can install ICF systems yourself, and they also feature a couple of bonuses. First, they’re an all-in-one system — both form and insulation. Second, you have the option to use the forms to build a complete wall system for an entire structure.

Pour-in-place systems using XPS foam panels are also available. They have the same characteristics as an ICF system, plus they give you the option to cut the ties and salvage up to 90 percent of the foam board. You can use the foam board on your next project, so there’s a nice savings for you. You can give your customer the option of a solid concrete wall or not.

However, it doesn’t end there. We’ve only scratched the surface of the different systems that are available. In this chapter I’ll cover:

  • Lightweight concrete blocks that allow you to use standard construction tools, like a handsaw, to cut the blocks

  • Mortarless block systems that lock together with rebar while the cavities are filled with grout and insulation

  • Structural insulated panels (sheets sandwiching rigid foam) that can be used for building floors, roofs, and walls

  • EPS foam panels flanged with steel wire mesh that’s later sprayed with concrete

  • EPS molded into steel frame panels

  • Concrete panels reinforced with steel

Now the question becomes, “What system do you want to use?” Keep in mind that the system you choose may be decided by where you’re building and/or whether you’re building above or below grade. Once you’ve zeroed in on a couple of systems, call or write the manufacturer to get the complete information you’ll need to make an informed decision.
