Carpenter's Steel System
HL Stud Corporation was
formed in 1994 by a couple of people experienced in the residential
and commercial market. Understanding the structural and economic advantages
of steel in the commercial market, they saw an opportunity for steel
to cross over into the residential market. But they understood that
it had to be more user-friendly if it was going to succeed. They created
a family of products that offer consistent pricing and quality and a
simple application for site builders and manufactured housing builders.
Their U.S. patented design combines wood and steel in the framing system.
Figure 4-7 shows a premanufactured house builder attaching Carpenter's
Steel Joist to a rim joist with a pneumatic nailer. The built-in nailing
flange and bent shear tab eliminate the need for joist hangers.

Wood framing material is used only in plates. Notice the wood top, bottom
and double plates, rough opening frames, cripples, headers, and the
backer/nailer of corners and partitions in Figure 4-8. Those
will overcome most of the problems I had with my first steel framing
experience in the mall.
