Construction Notes Here are a few pointers to
consider when working with MaxiTile:
Over wood shakes, remove any old trim and cut the overhang at the
eaves. Apply a minimum 40 pound felt, and then install vertical nailing
strips (1 x 4) over rafters and horizontal battens (1 x 4) on top
of the vertical battens at 20 inches on center.
Over wood shingles, make the same preparations as for wood shakes
except you can choose either nailing strips and battens, or fasteners
long enough to penetrate 3/4 inch through the existing sheathing.
Over rock roofs, spud and sweep off all rocks so the 90 pound felt
wont be punctured. Install tiles using fasteners long enough
to penetrate the substrate at least 3/4 inch.
In areas where maximum wind speeds are below 60 mph, use MaxiTiles
square cap nail; for wind speeds from 60 to 110 mph, use their 15/8-inch
screw and washer system. Each tile must also have a dab of adhesive
1/4 inch thick by 1 inch wide applied to the side of each barrel.
Special screws are available for steel framing.
For areas with winds above 110 mph, use a 43/8-inch screw and washer
system and fasten externally through the headlaps at the top of
each barrel. The headlap is the finish tile cap used at the ridge,
hip, and rake. Apply a dab of silicone over the head of each fastener.
Tiles dont require predrilling.
In areas prone to high winds, a simple solution could be to use the
11/2-inch Tile Clip. It provides increased resistance to separation
or lifting of the tile at side laps during heavy wind.
