American Fiberboard Association (AFA)

The AFA is a national trade organization of manufacturers of cellulosic fiberboard products used in residential and commercial construction. They provide product literature for individuals engaged in distribution, specification, and construction fields. They work with government and private organizations to develop and improve industry standards and specifications and to update building codes. They also provide technical information to the general public as well as professionals. Of course, their objective is to promote the use of fiberboard, but they also promote ongoing educational and research activities on the product.

Fiberboard can be found in sheathing panels for exterior wall applications, roofing substrate, and other specialty products.

American Hardboard Association (AHA)

The AHA is located in the same office as the AFA. Also a national trade organization, the AHA represents manufacturers of hardboard products used for exterior siding, interior wall paneling, household and commercial furniture, and industrial and commercial products. Hardboard (generic term) can be found in such products as lap siding and siding accessories such as corners; paneling – smooth or textured surfaces; doorskins; garage door panels; and the list goes on. Hardboard is made from wood chips converted to fibers and permanently bonded under heat and pressure into a panel. The wood fibers are combined with natural and synthetic binders and other additives that improve certain properties.

AHA serves as a central clearinghouse on industry and technical information for trade professionals, government agencies, and the general public. The association publishes a variety of brochures and pamphlets that are free, and videos that cost up to $5.00 each. They are concerned about the environment, and promote educational and promotion programs. With the help of independent researchers, they conduct timely research activities relating to hardboard use and performance; they improve industry standards and specifications, and they work to update building codes.
